It was here beside the church in Umeå on a windy Sunday in October 1809 that commanding officer Georg Carl von Döbeln gave his famous speech to his soldiers. The war between Sweden and Russia was over and the Finnish soldiers there now faced an uncertain fate in their Russian-occupied homeland.
