This monument was erected in memory of the Swedish and Russian soldiers who fell victim to the diseases collectively known as “camp fever” during the war of 1808-1809 and who now lie buried here. The hard 1808-1809 winter in Kalix is not only remembered for the Swedish surrender signed here on 25 March, but also for the many people who died from disease.
