In July 1809 Swedish General Johan August Sandels decided to attack the Russian army, which was then spread out along the northern Swedish coastline. He sent a small force to Sörmjöle, but the Russians managed to assemble their scattered army faster than anticipated and the Swedes came under heavy fire on 4 July.
