The Swedish expeditionary force landed here on 17 August 1809. The force of 6,800 soldiers had sailed from Stockholm planning to attack the occupying Russian force led by Nikolai Kamensky. This manoeuvre was intended to help secure better terms in the ongoing peace negotiations with Russia.
